Number 666
The number 666 is the famous number of the Beast mentioned in the Book of Revelation of John (13:18). Having become in the collective imagination a symbol of absolute evil, it is the subject of far more nuanced interpretations in numerology, and its historical meaning, linked to Hebrew gematria, most likely connects it to the emperor Nero.
Origin and etymology
The original verse, Revelation 13:18, written in Greek at the end of the first century (around 95) on the island of Patmos, reads: Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred and sixty-six. Most contemporary exegetes — Bruce Metzger, Adela Yarbro Collins, David Aune — see in it a Hebrew gematria transcription of the name of Nero Caesar: נרון קסר (NRWN QSR) gives 50+200+6+50+100+60+200 = 666. Some ancient manuscripts also carry the variant 616, which corresponds to the Latin form Nero Caesar without the final second N.
Evolution and tradition
In the Middle Ages, 666 was applied to various rulers hostile to the Church: Emperor Frederick II, then the popes by the Protestant Reformers — Luther saw in it the mark of the Roman pontiff. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, occultism took up the number from a non-Christian perspective. Aleister Crowley ostentatiously proclaimed himself To Mega Therion, the Great Beast 666, turning the stigma into a claim. Popular culture made it a cliché: films, metal music (Iron Maiden, The Number of the Beast, 1982). In Pythagorean numerology, 6+6+6 = 18, then 1+8 = 9, the number of accomplishment.
Practical use
In modern numerology, 666 is not regarded as inherently evil: it rather signals an excess linked to the triple 6 (with 6 being the number of harmony, family, and care). Three 6s would point to a drift — perfectionism, excessive attachment, a compulsive search for balance. If you frequently encounter 666 (on clocks, on license plates), some traditions see it as a call to recenter your material life. Fear of 666, called hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia, is a phobia recognized by some psychiatrists.
Going further
The identification Nero = 666 enjoys academic consensus but remains a minority view in certain evangelical circles, which prefer a future eschatological reading. Note that the number 7 in the Bible represents divine fullness (seven days, seven seals); the number 6 repeated three times therefore symbolizes cubic imperfection, the human who claims divinity without attaining it. Science, of course, recognizes no specific power in this number — it is a cultural symbol, not an acting force.
