Ascendant

The Ascendant is, in astrology, the sign of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. It marks the beginning of the first astrological house and remains one of the most important calculated points in the natal chart.

Origin and etymology

The word ascendant comes from the Latin ascendere, to rise, itself a translation of the Greek horoskopos used by Claudius Ptolemy in the Tetrabiblos in the 2nd century. The Hellenistic astrologers of Alexandria codified, from the 1st century BCE, the importance of the rising degree as the anchor point of the chart. The medieval Arab tradition, with Abu Ma'shar (787-886), extended this tradition. In the medieval Latin world, the ascendens became a central piece of data in any chart casting, calculated from the latitude of the location and the time of birth. The French word ascendant became established in astrological language as early as the 16th century.

Evolution and tradition

The Ascendant was long considered as determining as the Sun, and even more so in Hellenistic astrology. The psychologization of astrology in the 20th century, under the influence of Dane Rudhyar and Andre Barbault, brought the Ascendant back to the forefront as an indicator of social persona and embodiment. Modern astrology distinguishes Sun (identity), Moon (inner life) and Ascendant (outward appearance). Precise calculation requires a reliable birth time: a four-minute discrepancy shifts the Ascendant by about one degree, which can change signs as it crosses a cusp.

Practical use

The Ascendant is used to describe how a person presents to the world, their visible temperament, their physique, their spontaneous reflexes. Coupled with the Sun and the Moon, it forms the fundamental trio of astrological identity. On Tarotoui, the Ascendant calculation is available in the natal chart tools, from the exact date, time and place of birth. Knowing your Ascendant sheds light on your social interactions and tempers the interpretation of the solar sign taken in isolation. Many astrologers consider the Ascendant the lens through which the rest of the chart expresses itself.

Going further

The Ascendant depends on the chosen house system (Placidus, Koch, Whole Sign, Regiomontanus), although the cusp of the first house remains the same in most of them. A frequent mistake is to confuse Ascendant with Sun sign: they do not designate the same thing. Note also that the Ascendant can only be calculated if the time of birth is known precisely — without this data, it remains undetermined.
